The Global Latin American Studies research cluster will bring together humanities scholars from across Arizona State University schools and campuses to engage with and foster cutting-edge, transdisciplinary scholarship on Latin America. The cluster will focus on historical and contemporary aspects of topics that link the United States and Latin America from a humanities perspective. These include causes and effects of transnational migration, the international drug trade and its consequences, climate change in its human and ecological aspects, food and health, indigeneity and indigenous rights, religion and politics, gender, sexuality, and the crisis of violence against women and LGBTQI+ communities in the region.
The primary goal of this research cluster is to foster a sense of community and collegiality among the many Latin Americanists scattered across ASU's campuses, laying the ground for future collaborations. The cluster’s emphasis on forging truly hemispheric perspectives, as well as its sensitivity to both diachronic and synchronic forms of analysis, pushes members to contextualize their work in the broadest ways possible. Consequently, increased collaboration and broadened perspectives promise to raise the profile of Latin American research and course offerings across campus going forward.
