The IHR supports projects that encompass interdisciplinary research from across ASU, spanning departments, schools, colleges and disciplines.

The Institute for Humanities Research (IHR) generates and supports transformative, transdisciplinary, collaborative, and socially engaged humanities scholarship that contributes to the analysis and resolution of the world’s many challenges. The IHR supports projects that encompass interdisciplinary research from across ASU, spanning departments, schools, colleges and disciplines.

In an effort to enhance the intellectual climate of the university and to promote excellence and innovation in humanities scholarship, the IHR encourages ASU scholars from humanities disciplines, often in partnership with faculty from other fields, to take advantage of funded research opportunities. By facilitating collaboration among scholars in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences, the Institute’s funding programs expose faculty in many fields to what humanities research is, how it operates, and why it is important. At the same time, these funding initiatives often attract additional external research dollars.

Every year the IHR honors a work of academic nonfiction by a humanities faculty member, alternating years between ASU faculty and scholars from around the world with the Transdisciplinary Book Award.
The Annual Distinguished Lecturer program brings to campus a prominent humanities scholar whose work highlights the importance of humanities research.
Every academic year, the IHR hosts a series of events centered around a subject that is of great interest and which has a significant impact on the interdisciplinary world of humanities.
