The Institute for Humanities Research (IHR) at Arizona State University is seeking artistic entries that address the theme of Home for a contemporary art exhibition in Spring 2014. At the IHR we strive to advance scholarly work that contributes to productive social dialogue and makes a difference in the world. We believe that artworks are an important part of that dialogue.
We are looking for works that illuminate and enrich our understanding of the concept of “Home” through critical explorations of home as a term that resonates on cultural, emotional, intellectual, religious, philosophical, political and spiritual levels—as a place, a space, a myth, a source of identity, a promised land, a state of being, a war zone, an impossibility, and/or an inalienable right. This simple word is open to a wide variety of interpretations. Home can connote security, belonging, memory, and comfort, or arouse feelings of dread, alienation, and pain. Home informs and is informed by geography and history, identities and ideologies, imagined and lived experiences. Pieces may explore what it means to create a home or to be without home, what happens when we leave home and arrive in a new place, or how relationships with culture, history, emotion, intellect, religion, philosophy, politics, and spirituality affect the idea of home.
We invite artists of all media to explore, interpret, respond, and contribute to these questions by submitting work that addresses these ideas.
1. Submit up to three works plus detail images if needed. Images must be numbered to correspond with numbers on the exhibition entry form. Please submit images in .jpeg format, 72 dpi, and a maximum file size of 1 MB each. For video entries please submit a web address link to the work online and additional description if needed.
2. Artist Statement (maximum 250 words)
3. A completed Entry Form
