Reading group to explore impact of works by 2012 IHR Distinguished Lecturer and interdisciplinary artist Coco Fusco

In preparation for the arrival of the Institute for Humanities Research’s 2012 Distinguished Lecturer, Coco Fusco, the IHR is organizing a reading/discussion group to explore the impact of Fusco's work.

Reading group meetings will take place from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan. 23, 2012, and Feb. 27, 2012. All meetings will be held in the Social Sciences building, Room 109 on the Tempe campus. The reading group meetings are free and open to the public.

The reading group meetings will be led by Adriene Jenik, Professor and Director, School of Art; Marivel Danielson, Associate Professor, School of Transborder Studies; Tamara Underiner, Associate Professor, School of Theatre and Film; Carlo Melo, Assistant Professor, School of Theatre and Film; and Desiree Garcia, Assistant Professor, School of Transborder Studies.

Fusco is the Chair of the Fine Art Department at Parsons/The New School for Design and an interdisciplinary artist, performer, writer, and curator. Through her work, Fusco has challenged accepted thought about identity, culture, race, gender, war, and politics. Her performances and videos have been shown in venues worldwide, including the Whitney Biennial, London’s Institute of Contemporary Art, and the Smithsonian Institution.

The 2012 Annual Distinguished Lecture, “Migration Interrupted: Rights, Freedom, Opportunism, and the Controversy over U.S. Immigration Policy,” will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 8 at Katzin Concert Hall on the Tempe campus.

The Institute for Humanities Research in ASU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences was established in 2005. It has taken the lead in promoting excellence and innovation in humanities scholarship by contributing to scholarly research that addresses socially significant issues and engaging the community.
