Transportation & Housing

Transportation: Most institute participants will fly into Phoenix’s Sky Harbor Airport and take the 90-mile shuttle to downtown Prescott. Visiting scholars are responsible for making flight arrangements and paying for transportation from the $3,200 stipend. You should plan to arrive in Prescott at least by Sunday evening, July 21, 2009, for an informal social event. Both Flagstaff and Prescott have airports, which you might also check, but you will probably find that the additional costs to fly into them does not make up for spending two hours on the shuttle. The shuttle’s drop-off location in Prescott is within two blocks of Sharlot Hall Museum, and we will arrange to meet you there once we know your travel plans. Throughout most of the day, the shuttle runs at least hourly, and the roundtrip price is $56. You can book a reservation or determine schedules and costs at this website.

Scholars who drive to Prescott will find free parking near the museum. Once you are in town, you’ll find little need for a car, since Prescott is a very walkable community, and most institute locations are within several blocks of one another. Of course, if you wish to take a weekend trip to Sedona, Jerome, or any of the many outstanding forests and recreational sites, you’ll need transportation. We’ll arrange for group trips with the cars we have, or you can rent a car in town.

Housing: We have arranged for participants to stay at Prescott College’s dorms, which are homes and cottages near the campus, and within a five- or ten-minute walk of Sharlot Hall Museum. You are responsible for payment from the $3,200 stipend. The rent ranges from $28/night to $60, with most rooms around $30 for a double and $35 for a single. A few private studios are also available in the $50-$60 range. The larger and least expensive home has 11 bedrooms, whereas most other cottages have one to four bedrooms. All houses include a kitchen and coin-operated laundry, and most of the dorms will offer wireless internet access by summer 2009 (the museum is wireless as well). There are no televisions, and smoking or drinking are not permitted in the houses.

The dorms include sheets, comforters, towels, and most kitchen utensils, so there is little you need to bring. However, there is no maid service, so you are responsible for keeping your space clean. Once you have been accepted into the institute we will send more information about housing, but it is your responsibility to call Prescott College at 928-350-4319 and make a reservation. If you want to bring family during any or all of the institute, or if you wish to stay in a vacation rental, extended-stay motel, B&B, historic inn, or any other facility – many of which are within walking distance of the museum – please consult the “visitors” section of the Chamber of Commerce website. You will also find vacation rentals, guest cottages, and long-term apartments at websites such as craigslist.
