Receipt Deadline: March 2, 2009
Notification: April 1, 2009
The complete application package should be submitted via email to ihr@asu.edu – not to the National Endowment for the Humanities (send only the NEH cover sheet to the Endowment, see #1 below). In your email submission to IHR, put “Leopold” in the subject line. Include the requested information below as attachments (#1-4), either in MS Word or pdf versions. Ignore instructions at the NEH website about sending multiple hard copies to IHR; we are requesting the entire application to be sent online. Please label each attachment with your last name and file description, such as “Smith.CV.doc.” The complete application packet includes the following four (4) parts:
- NEH Cover Sheet, downloadable from this website.
This is the only document you will send to the National Endowment for the Humanities, and it is submitted online, not as a hard copy. For your own records, save and print the final page that you submit to NEH. Also, save the final version, as either a Word document or pdf, and submit it to IHR, along with the remainder of your application materials, which include:
- a CV of no more than five (5) pages
- two (2) letters of support from colleagues familiar with your professional accomplishments, as well as your ability to contribute to and benefit from the institute. If you have participated in an earlier NEH institute, a letter from the director or lead scholar(s) would be useful. For this online submission original signatures are not required, and your referees may submit their letters directly to IHR if they choose (make sure they include "Leopold" in the subject line).
- an essay of no more than four (4) double-spaced pages that addresses the following six areas:
a. Relevance: 1) How is the Leopold institute relevant to your research? 2) How is the institute relevant to your teaching?
b. Interest: What elements of the Leopold institute interest you most? Why?
c. Application: 1) How will you apply the knowledge learned at the Leopold institute to your teaching, research, or community activities? 2) What courses would you like to develop as a result of the institute?
d. Participation: What contribution do you think you will make to the Leopold institute?
e. Approach: Because the institute stresses an interdisciplinary approach, describe any projects, teaching, research, or community service you have participated in that cross disciplinary boundaries.
f. Institution: Describe the department or academic unit and institution where you are currently employed, and discuss your role (committee service, curriculum development, leadership, etc.).
